Is it important to have disability insurance?
by Gary Fegan
If you become disabled -- absolutely. If you do not become disabled -- absolutely!
Think for one moment what you would do if you were sick or hurt and could not work and your income stopped. How long would you be able to pay your bills? If you are like most people, it would be a very short time.
Therefore, it is an absolutely “yes” answer. If you become disabled and have the coverage, you will be able to meet your financial obligations and not have the added stress of your financial situation. If you do not become disabled, you will have the peace of mind 7 days a week and 24 hours a day knowing that you are covered, if in fact you were ever to need it.
I know first hand the benefits of having disability insurance. My business partner became disabled and could not work. He and I both were stressed-out at first, because we had a business to run and bills to pay, both at the office and at home. Thankfully, he had disability insurance and did not have to take any salary from the business while out on disability. This allowed me to pay someone to help out in his absence and allowed him the peace of mind to know his personal financial obligations would all be met.
As difficult as being disabled is, it is significantly more stressful if you do not have the income replacement that disability income insurance can provide to meet your financial obligations. Do not delay securing a disability income policy for yourself asap!
