The Federal Government offers disability insurance under the FERS program.
As a result of the FERS program most major insurance companies have stopped
offering long term disability insurance to any state, local, or federal
government employees.
Physicians, CPA's, Lawyers, and Engineers
Berkshire has not cut off all government employees from obtaining private
disability insurance. We will now offer individual disability insurance
policies to any physician, dentist, attorney, or engineer working for
either the state or federal government. The plan offered through Berkshire
Life Insurance Company of America will provide up to $2,000 a month of
additional individual disability insurance for any physician, dentist,
engineer, CPA, or attorney over and above the FERS disability insurance
program.
Special Rules for Requesting a Disability Insurance Quote
As we only have one disability insurance quote request form on our web site, we ask that when you fill out the request you please identify yourself as working for the government. This will prevent us from sending you an invalid quote, and wasting your time. There is a section marked additional information in the form, please tell us you are requesting disability insurance for a government position there.
Government Occupations other than Physicians, Dentists, CPA's, Lawyers,
and Engineers
If you do not qualify for benefits with Berkshire, we recommend you
seek coverage through Mass Mutual. It is our opinion that own-occupation
contracts are the best contracts available in todays disability insurance
marketplace, however we only offer them to the occupations listed above.
Mass Mutual has a disability insurance policy called "The Radius" which
is an income-replacement contract, and does not provide pure own-occupation
benefits, however it is better than having all of your disability coverage
rely on the FERS disability insurance program. We recommend you seek coverage
with Mass Mutual if you are unable to purchase it through us.
