As a physician with a highly specialized practice, you should have
an insurance policy that protects your income if you can't work
in that specialty. Physicians who specialize in an area of medicine
should have a true own occupation definition of disability. Berkshire
Life Insurance Company of America's Provider Plus * disability policy
recognizes your medical specialty as your occupation. We can give
you this definition for any benefit period, including our graded
lifetime benefit period.
I don't need to tell you the level of commitment that has
gone into your choice to be an OB/GYN physician. You have spent
4 years of specialized residency training learning your job, as
well as written and oral exams to become board certified. If something
happened and you could no longer perform the duties of an obstetrician-gynecologist,
would you want to have your benefits reduced or eliminated if
you choose to be a general medicine physician, or work in some
other capacity? Would you want to be forced back to work in another
job? Most disability policies will do one of those two things.
Having committed so much time, energy, and money to learning your
specialty, be sure to get a disability insurance contract that
protects your investment.
Some contracts will define your occupation as a "physician".
Berkshire defines your occupation as an obstetrician-gynecologist,
and will pay you if you cannot perform the material and substantial
duties of an obstetrician-gynecologist. This is perhaps the greatest
competitive advantage the Provider Plus contract has over others.

Getting The Best Disability Insurance Rate for Obstetricians
OB/GYN's have a highly stressful job, with higher than average
claims experience. Because of this, a true own occupation disability
contract is not cheap. It is an investment in your financial security.
There are ways, however, to get a reasonable premium. First, it
always helps if you are a non-smoker. You may be eligible for
a 15% non-tobacco user discount. Second, if you are in very good
health, you may be eligible for a preferred risk discount assuming
your disability insurance policy is issued without any pre-existing
condition exclusions. Third, and most importantly, if you work
in a practice where there are other Obstetricians or staff who
also want disability insurance, you may be eligible for an Employer
Sponsored discount if only two of you sign up together.
An employer sponsored disability insurance program can result
in large savings, especially for women. Women can save almost
40% in certain cases (depending on age, amount of coverage, etc...)
Should the company officially endorse Provider
Plus as the disability insurance policy of choice
for their employees, and employee or owner of the company can
receive a uni-sex rate, with a discount of 10% once two or more
people sign up. Uni-sex rates are a very large savings for women,
and for men over the age of 43. What's more, because Provider
Plus contract is non-cancelable, you get these savings every year,
even if you leave the practice!
When you request a quote from our office, please be sure to put
in the disability
insurance quote request form that you are interested
in establishing an employer sponsored plan. One of our disability
specialists will be happy to discuss your options with you and
show you how to get this important savings on your policy.
