Many law firms have Group long-term disability (Group LTD) for their associates and partners. It is typically paid for by the firm and covers 60% of your income up to a monthly maximum of $5,000 or $10,000. There are several things you need to know about the shortfalls of relying on Group LTD;

• When is 60% not Really 60%?
   
  • The higher your income is, the lower your percentage income replacement is. They cap benefits at $5,000 or $10,000 per month.
     
  • Somebody making $100,000 may have close to 60% income replacement, but somebody making $500,000 only has a 24% income replacement.
     
• The benefit is taxed during a claim, so your 60% turns into something closer to 40% during a claim.
